Your plant is a living gift that can stay with you for months, even years. Most indoor plants need the same few things: the right light, the right amount of water and a steady spot. Follow these simple steps to keep your plant healthy in UAE homes.

• Give it bright, indirect light. Place your plant near a window with soft, filtered light. East or north-facing windows work well. Direct sun, especially in the UAE afternoon, can burn the leaves.
• Check before you water. Push a finger into the soil or potting mix. If the top few centimetres feel dry, it is time to water. If it still feels moist, wait a day or two. In summer, when the AC runs all day, plants usually dry out faster.
• Water well, then let it drain. Water slowly with room-temperature water until it runs out of the bottom of the pot. Avoid ice or very cold water, as it can shock the roots.
• Never leave it sitting in water. If your plant sits in a decorative pot, saucer or foil sleeve, empty any water that collects at the bottom. Standing water rots the roots.
• Keep it away from AC vents and heat. Cold, dry air from AC vents dries the leaves and can make buds and leaves drop. Keep your plant away from heat sources and drafty doorways too.
• Add a little humidity. Air-conditioned rooms are dry. Mist the leaves every few days, set the pot on a tray of wet pebbles, or group it with other plants. Avoid misting the flowers themselves.
• Read the signs. Drooping leaves or crispy brown edges usually mean your plant is too dry. Yellow leaves and soft stems usually mean it is getting too much water.
• Remove faded flowers and leaves. Cut old blooms and yellow leaves at the base of their stems. As a result, your plant puts its energy into new growth.
• Keep the leaves clean. Wipe dust off the leaves with a soft, damp cloth now and then. Clean leaves take in more light.

Good to know: Many indoor plants are not safe to eat. Keep your plant out of reach of pets and small children.
